The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, typically shortened to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or, “Obamacare,” was signed into law in 2010. The idea was to help lower the cost of health care and ensure all Americans, including those with an illness, can get health insurance.

Each year since then, qualified shoppers have been able to enroll in Marketplace health insurance plans, switch plans, and get subsidies on health plans during the ACA Open Enrollment period. During other times of the year, individuals with a qualifying life event could get covered under a Special Enrollment Period.

When is ACA Open Enrollment?

This year, the ACA Open Enrollment period for 2019 coverage begins on November 1, 2018, and runs through December 15, 2018.
